LF Maloka Executive Mayor
PERSONAL BACKGROUND Cllr Lerato Franscina Maloka, the Executive Mayor of the Lesedi Local Municipality is a mother of one daughter Naledi.
Cllr Lerato as affectionally known in Lesedi completed both her secondary and tertiary education years at Park Town College her Matric and N4, N5, and N6 Diploma in Management respectively.
Cllr Lerato’s political activism and commitment both in the African National Congress and its Youth League saw her breaking through into local government politics. Cllr Lerato was elected in the 2006 local government elections to represent the African National Congress as the majority party in the Lesedi Local Municipality Council, consequently, served as a Member of the Mayoral Committee responsible for Development and Planning and Housing since to 2011. In the 2011 local government election, still representing the African National Congress, was elected to serve as its Executive Mayor.
Her strong and diligent management skills and interpersonal communication skills saw her becoming the integral part of Chueu, Chuene and Masha Attorneys during its first years of practice in Heidelberg in 1998 when she was employed as an administrator.
It was during the same year that she became part of Lesedi community and immediately became active in local politics especially through membership in the ANC and ANCYL. In 2001 to 2006, she was employed as an Administrator in the ANC’s parliamentary Constituency Office. This position exposed her to the behind the scenes world of how the ANC manages and coordinates a variety of political campaigns and programmes, at different times with different objectives.
At that stage, her understanding of the meaning to activism in the ANC and the approach to governance and government was thoroughly harnessed. What she had gained from serving the community of Lesedi and the local politics transformed her ambition to serving the community of Lesedi into being a reality Serving as a member of the mayoral committee came with its own challenges especially considering the challenges faced by the municipality insofar as the LED/housing/agricultural matters were concerned. Nevertheless, there are good things to write home about Cllr Lerato active leadership role in what was achieved by the municipality during her tenure of office such as the construction of the Coca Cola plant, the development of the Zone of Opportunity, the Jameson Park Agricultural Commonage and the upgrading of the hostels to Community Residential Units, to mention just a few.
In addition to these, there were a number of relevant training and skills that all serving councillors had received during the last five years in an attempt to make local government more efficient and effective in making the lives of communities better. These include attaining Certificates in Municipal Management Development Programme, Executive Leadership Municipal Development Programme, Community facilitation and Project Management. Currently, Cllr Lerato is also qualified with a Certificate in Programme in Management Development for Municipal Finance (CPMD) with the University of Witwatersrand; this has been done in her quest to become better in what she was assigned
