Lesedi Local Municipality
People Centred & Performance Driven Municipality

LF Maloka Executive Mayor

As South Africa turned a seminal page in its history in 1994, the need for unity and national reconciliation burned fiercely. A young teenager, Cllr Lerato, drew inspiration from the clarion call by the iconic Nelson Mandela to forge ties between the races that apartheid divided. It spurred her on to serve and to lead. A reluctant politician, it was always Cllr Lerato’s dream to work tirelessly in the backrooms to better serve her community.

When she settled in Heidelberg in 1998, the distinct schism between racially-entrenched communities became glaringly apparent. Farmworkers and the black community on the one side - farmers and those who controlled the means of production on the other. Cllr Lerato knew she had her work cut out, to improve relations and uplift the disadvantaged, the poor, the hungry, and the downtrodden. Her passion for ringing in changes soon catapulted her into the forefront of local politics.

At just 35, she became one of the country’s youngest mayors. Undaunted, she would forge a new era of accountability. Her unwavering stance on rooting out corruption and nepotism is well documented. Under her astute leadership, a new era of clean and responsible administration was born. A complex personality, Cllr Lerato is driven by a steely determination to ensure economic transformation. She is all too aware that bridges of forgiveness and tolerance need urgent construction, and that she needs to smelter a common destiny for all her constituents.

Cllr Lerato epitomises humility and candour. She may chair a business forum in the morning, yet be found talking to desperate farmworkers in the afternoon. Sharing the hopes, dreams and aspirations of her constituents is what drives Cllr Lerato, and helps her aspire to new heights.

From humble beginnings in the hilly, shrouded fields of QwaQwa, where she was raised, to attaining the highest municipal post in Heidelberg, Cllr Lerato is a dynamic woman with fire, passion and determination. She reminds everyone that she is there to serve and to lead. Under her astute leadership and guidance, the forgotten town of Heidelberg and its surrounds are now soaring to new heights. She has served every political post with distinction.
